America's birth name

Cela fait 500 ans aujourd'hui que le nom "America" fit son apparition pour la première fois sur une carte pour désigner le continent qui porte aujourd'hui ce nom. Elle est l'oeuvre du catographe allemand Martin Waldseemüller et fut publiée a Saint Dié, en France. Tirée à plus de 1000 exemplaires, un fait en soi remarquable pour l'époque, il n'en resterait plus qu'un, acquis par la Librairie du Congrès en 2003.

"America" servit d'abord à désigner la partie sud du Continent. L'histoire veut que Waldseemüller aurait cherché par la suite à corriger son erreur d'avoir attribué à Amerigo Vespucci la découverte de l'Amérique plutôt qu'à Christophe Colomb. Mais l'insistance de Colomb à penser qu'il avait atteint la côté Est de l'Asie et non un nouveau continent aurait joué en faveur de Vespucci. Dans des cartes successives, Waldseemüller aurait même éliminé le nom America. C'était visiblement trop tard.

It will be 500 years today, that the first map of the world with the name "America"on it was published in Saint Dié, France. The map, work of the German cartographer, Martin Waldseemüller, is also known to be the first map to outline the continents in a way close to what we know today.

It is said that Waldseemüller tried, years after his impressive work, to correct the assumption that Amerigo Vespucci discovered America. He even published successive maps without the name America. It was obviously too late. Not that Waldseemüller ignored Columbus findings, but Vespucci was the first to insist on the fact that those new discovered lands were indeed part of a new continent and not the East Coast of Asia, as Columbus long believed.

Tourist guide in Alsace - France, I'd like to inform you of this site : http://www.bibliotheque-humaniste.eu/amerique.htm The Humanist Library in Selestat has a book "Cosmographia Introductio" that was printed in 1507 where is the first mention of America, speaking of the "New World" with a map of this area as it was possible to draw it in those times.
