LAMERICA
Je préfère le
dire d’entrée, je suis une inconditionnelle de Terrence Malick. Son dernier
film, « Le Nouveau
Monde » que j’ai vu ce week-end n’a fait que renforcer ma conviction qu’il
est l’un des plus grands cinéastes de tous les temps. Là où certains lui ont
reproché sa lenteur, sa naïveté, j’ai vu une fable poétique et philosophique
sur l’amour, la beauté et la brutalité humaine. J’ai aimé l’extraordinaire
travail de montage, où les plans très lents, à la caméra lascive et subtilement
tremblante, succèdent aux plans saccadés, courts, parfois coupés en plein
mouvement, miroir d’une bande sonore remarquable où les sons débordent souvent
dans la séquence suivante, se brouillent, se perdent. Comme les séquences et
les sons de la vie. (bande annonce)
Et puis, il
y a ce mythe solide du Nouveau Monde, qui n’était pas encore l’Amérique. Ils
feront tout, ces blancs débarqués de leur caravelle, envoyés par une Angleterre
cupide et coloniale, pour exploiter cette nouvelle terre vierge, paradis
terrestre. Et le mythe continuera de fasciner et de nourrir les rêves de
dizaines de générations après ces premiers migrants.
J’ai alors
pensé à ces arrière-grands-pères dont j’ai appris récemment qu’ils avaient
tenté leur chance en Amérique à la fin du 19e siècle, chacun de son
côté, arrivés certainement tous deux par Ellis Island. On m’a assurée que
l’ancêtre maternel avait passé 20 ans à Chicago, de l’autre on ne sait rien,
sinon qu’il est lui aussi rentré après quelques années pour marier mon
arrière-grand-mère. Je me suis souvent demandée ce qui les avait fait revenir au
pays. L’Amérique les a-t-elle chassés (elle n’était pas tendre
alors avec les Italiens) ? Ont-ils été déçus par Lamerica ?
Un oncle
maternel m’a appelée ce même week-end pour m’annoncer, «parce que tu aimes
l’histoire de la famille », qu’il avait retrouvé la photo du fameux grand
père de Chicago. J’ai hâte de voir à quoi ses yeux pensaient.
I will start by saying that i am a Terrence Malick
unconditional fan. His lastest film “The New World” just added to my conviction that
he is one of the best film directors ever. American critics have been harsh
with him, denouncing his naivety and the slow pace of his film. I saw none of
that. “The New World ” is a long, beautiful and
dark poem on love, beauty and human brutality. As usual, Terrence Malick again
proved he is a master of editing, both sounds and images, when sounds overlap
each others, slip into the next sequences. (trailer)
And then, there is the Myth, about this “New World” that has
not yet become America.
The white men will do anything to stick to this new paradise. The myth will
persist for generations after them. Those early migrants, made me think of two
of my great grand fathers who both crossed
the Atlantic in the late 19th
century. My maternal ancestor spent almost 20 years in Chicago. We don’t know much about the other
one, except he came back to marry my great grand mother. I often wonder why
they got back to Italy. Did America reject them? Didn't they found the New World they were dreaming of?
An uncle of mine called me a few days ago to tell me out of
the blue that he found a picture of my Chicagoan great grand father. I can’t
wait to see what his eyes were thinking of.
